Nasal pillows with a nasal cushion fit

Fisher & Paykel’s trademarked AirPillow seal inflates with the air from the CPAP machine. The nasal pillow cushion expands both inside the nostrils and around the nose. Most nasal pillows only seal the nostrils, but this mask acts as both a nasal pillow and as an under-the-nose nasal cushion. The AirSeal pillow also has wing-like stabilizing side supports that prevent the nasal pillows from dislodging. The region of the cushion that touches in and near the nostrils is extra-thin to prevent chafing and irritation.

Headgear stays in place

The mask's headgear extends from the nasal pillow, across the cheeks, and around the back of the head. The forehead is untouched, and nothing on the mask blocks vision. The cheek straps are soft yet made with a stiff, thick material to give them staying power. Notches carved into the cheek straps also hold the selected headgear position in place. The two bands that form the back of the headgear are much stretchier than the side straps to give a snug but not too tight fit behind the head.

Sizing and Fitting

Fitting

1. Turn the CPAP machine on so that airflow fills the nasal pillows.

2. Place your thumbs on the side supports on the pillow and spread the pillow open.

3. Guide the pillow tips into your nose.

4. Hold the pillow in place with one hand and lift the headgear up and over your head with another hand.

5. Position the straps over the ears.

6. Adjust the headgear for a loose, comfortable seal.

Adjusting for leaks

• Reseat the nasal pillows: Lift the pillows completely off the nose, and return them to position. Reseating is often the most effective way to resolve leaks.

• Check silicone tips: Verify that the silicone tips are protruding outward and not inverted or folded under the cushion.

• Change nasal pillow size. If excessive tightening is needed, consider different size nasal pillows. The pillows should sit securely in the nostrils but not be so large that they pop out or so small that it is difficult to seal.

How do I know that I am using the right size nasal pillow?
The silicone prongs on the pillows should fit securely in your nostrils after the cushion inflates with airflow from the CPAP machine. If they keep slipping out, they are the wrong size. Also, if you feel like you are not getting enough airflow from the CPAP machine, you should try a larger size. Finally, anytime you must overtighten headgear with any mask, you should consider a different size.
