Wisp Pediatric Mask, Nasal - Philips Respironics

The Philips Respironics Wisp Pediatric Nasal CPAP mask is an over the nose style mask that blends the stability of a traditional nasal mask design with a lightweight, tiny footprint customarily found only in nasal pillows. The Wisp nasal mask rests below the bridge of the nose and just under the nostrils, a design that keeps the child’s vision unobstructed and face mostly uncovered. The child friendly mask is not just a smaller mask for smaller patients. Every aspect of the mask has been carefully constructed to provide comfort and fun for young users and peace of mind for their parents and caregivers. Philips Respironics has also created family support tools to address the needs of both adults and children in the family. Information on these tools can be found here: Philips Respironics Caregiver Guide.

Tiny, lightweight and kid-friendly
The Mask perches on the tip of the nose. The nasal cushion is contoured to conform to the shape and curves of the facial structures of infants and toddlers. Due to a unique auto seal groove, the cushion seals as well as a traditional nasal CPAP mask without the bulk. Since the Wisp Pediatric cushion provides a stable seal, even users who need somewhat higher CPAP therapy or non-invasive ventilation settings can use it.

The cushion sits below the nostrils and not in them like nasal pillows do. Consequently, there is no nostril discomfort, so children tolerate it well. The tiny Pediatric mask has minimal contact with the face which means vision is unobstructed. Children can enjoy story time, family movie night, or even eat or play with the mask in place.

Soft, fun, and functional
The lightweight frame of the Wisp mask integrates with the headgear. Both the frame and the headgear sport a delightful giraffe print design, and the pediatric tubing is a matching yellow. Just as importantly, both frame and headgear are designed to fit the bone structure of infants and toddlers.

The integration of headgear with the frame supports the overall compactness of the Wisp Pediatric. The fabric frame has a soft, cushiony feel. An optional tubing wrap in a matching giraffe print is also available. The tubing wrap includes a tubing management loop to allow the CPAP or NIV hose to be positioned over the head and away from the body.

Frustration-free
The mask attaches to the frame & headgear with a quick clip system. The mask can be put on and removed without readjusting the headgear straps each time. Users can also choose to remove the clip and thread the frame through the eyelet on the mask. Quick-release tabs allow rapid disconnection from the CPAP or NIV machine without removing the mask and headgear, so that third trip to the bathroom before bed is just no big deal. The elbow on the frame swivels 360 degrees to allow for restless sleep. An extra-long length of tubing at the elbow also makes position changes while awake or asleep trouble-free. Since the entire mask is made up of only a few parts, it is easy to disassemble, clean and reassemble.

The mask features a Leak Correction Dial for making minor adjustments to improve the seal with the nasal cushion. Caregivers can adjust for leaks without disturbing the child by turning it to the right or left to nudge the cushion closer to the face.

Sizing and Fitting
The Philips Respironics Wisp Pediatric mask is recommended for infants and small children weighing between 22 and 40 pounds. Three sizes of masks (child small, child medium, and child large) are included in the Fit Pack. Caregivers can select the mask side by side with the child and readily upsize as the child grows. A sizing guide is included in the kit and is also available here.

The properly fitting mask sits on the tip of the nose, below the bridge, and just under the nostrils. Use the smallest mask that fits the width of the nose without blocking the nostrils.

The headgear should be loose enough to slide your fingers underneath easily. The straps should sit parallel and flat across the back of the head. The straps should be just tight enough to hold the mask in place. Overtightening can make leaks worse and cause skin irritation and red marks on the face. If the headgear needs to be so tight that it causes discomfort, consider trying a different cushion size.

When placing the mask on the child:

  • Hold the cushion over the nose with one hand.

  • Pull the headgear up and over the head with the other hand.

  • Clip the headgear in place.

  • Adjust the straps.

  • Attach the elbow and pediatric tubing to the cushion.

  • Connect the pediatric Wisp tubing to the CPAP or NIV tubing.

Tips to get the most comfortable seal and fit
Keep in mind that not all leaks need to be eliminated. Exhaled air flow escapes out of small holes in the mask by design. These air holes should not be blocked. CPAP and NIV equipment can compensate safely to deliver effective therapy with some leaks.

If the child is not bothered by the leak, and the equipment is not emitting an alarm, the leak is acceptable and does not hinder therapy delivery to the child.

To correct excessive leaks

  1. Avoid the temptation to overtighten the headgear. Overtightening will not only cause mask discomfort and interfere with sleep, but it can make leaks worse. The headgear should be loose enough to slide your fingers under easily. Although it seems counterintuitive, loosening the straps may allow the cushion to inflate with air and seal snugly but gently to the face.

  2. Reseating the Wisp Pediatric cushion is often the best way to seal a leak. To reseat the mask, gently lift the cushion off the nose, then reapply it. Reseating allows the cushion to reshape itself and form a fresh seal specific to the child’s current position.

  3. Use the Leak Correction Dial. Turn the dial to the right or left to adjust the angle on the front of the frame and nudge the cushion closer to the child. The Leak Correction Dial should be the first leak adjustment tried while a child is sleeping.

FAQ

Will the Wisp Pediatric work for all children?
This mask is generally meant for a child that is a minimum of 22 lbs of weight.
3 sizes of cushion are included so that you find what works best for them.

How does the leak correction dial work?
To changes the angle of the cushion so that it seals against the nose better. The leak correction dial can be used when the child is asleep to get those final adjustments without waking them up. Small adjustments make big differences.

Final CPAPMan Comments

Honestly, getting a small child to wear a sleep therapy mask is pretty daunting. It’s only been in recent years that masks have been available that actually fit the faces of infants and toddlers well. Fisher & Paykel have really taken CPAP and NIV for children to a new level with the Wisp Pediatric. The Wisp Pediatric fits without binding and meets all the social and developmental needs of the child.

Order from CPAPMan if you have a small child in your life who needs a better fitting CPAP mask.
