There are 2 types of humidifiers to consider. The first type is a heated humidifier system that helps generate moisture to pass through the tubing along with the air flow into your mouth.

The second type is called a passover (or passive) humidifier, which is a stand alone unit. With the passive or pass over humidifier, there is a short piece of tubing that goes from the CPAP machine to the water chamber. The longer, 6' tubing connects to the outlet side and run to the interface.
