CPAP Machine Cleaning and Maintenance

Wednesday, September 15, 2010 12:03:20 AM America/Los_Angeles

Anyone with sleep apnea requires the constant help of CPAP machines, also known as Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, and for people with obstructive sleep apnea, these devices and machines will be needed for a very long time. Thankfully, these devices and machines are very durable and very reliable that they will stay with you for very long periods of time. But of course, a part of the requirement is that these machines and its many parts are maintained and cleaned from time to time. Here are some helpful steps to help you out in cleaning your CPAP machines and devices!

  1. Prepare the following: Of course you will need cleaning supplies in order to start. First, you need a basin full of warm water, a soap, and a wiping towel. Prepare everything.

  1. Start with the mask: The next step is to soak your mask. But first, remove the head straps. This can be done by removing the head clips and forehead cushions. If you have a comfort gel mask, take measures to ensure that the water is not to hot to damage the mask, or just remove the seal all together.

  1. Next is the humidifier: If you have a heated humidifier, it is essential to first turn it off. Then, remove the humidifier from the base to soak it in water.

  1. Take care of the filters: There are two filters in the machine, one of which is disposable, you will find this as the paper and thin filter. Just remove this filter and replace it with a new one. The other filter is a sponge type filter which would also be required to be cleaned.

  1. Time to clean: Soak all the removed part in the basin for a good fifteen (15) to twenty (20) minutes. After soaking, place them on top of a towel to dry. You can also pat them dry to hasten the drying.

  1. CPAP Machines: As for the machines, you can just wipe these clean. But be careful not to wipe them with towels that are too wet as it may damage the machine itself.

  1. Do it weekly: Maintain your machine and devices at least once a week. With good maintenance, you will be able to prolong its use and will have it up and running for a long time!

CPAP Mask Replacement: Do It Regularly For Therapy Improvement!

Monday, June 7, 2010 11:46:18 PM America/Los_Angeles

Undergoing CPAP therapy? One important way to maintain your therapy is by having a regular CPAP mask replacement. Yes, it is important; and yes, you need to have your CPAP mask replaced regularly, just as you replace your toothbrush on a regular basis! Replacing your mask is very crucial in making sure that it is working effectively on you.

How Often Is A “Regular Basis”?

You don’t usually replace the whole mask system too soon. In some instances, it’s just the mask cushion that needs to be replaced, typically every three months. The whole system, on the other hand, should be replaced every six months. The time of replacement may vary, depending on certain situations that may affect the quality of your CPAP mask.
How Do You Know When It’s Time for CPAP Mask Replacement?

Sometimes, it is the manufacturer who indicates the replacement schedule. But at times, CPAP mask replacement may be based on your observations regarding how you feel about your mask. Let’s get into some details, which are as follows:
Softening of mask cushions: After six months of use, mask cushions typically start to deteriorate. It has silicone in it that gradually softens until it becomes unable to hold a seal. Once the cushions soften, it is of course time to replace them. Being too soft will eventually lead to having air leaks and you don’t want that, for air leaks reduce the effectiveness of CPAP therapy!

Loosened or stretched out head gear: No matter how careful you are in using your mask, there will really come a time that the head gear will loosen. Loose head gear also means reducing your therapy’s effectiveness and for that, it is naturally important to have it replaced.

Overall Benefits and Importance Of Regular CPAP Mask Replacement

Effective therapy and constant feeling of comfort – these are the two major benefits of regularly replacing your CPAP mask. Just make sure that you are always in the know of the important ways to improve the quality and comfort of your therapy.

Your CPAP unit is a like an organic body comprised of many different parts that need to act together as one. Each part has its corresponding duty that needs to be accomplished so that the rest of the unit could function just as well and as properly. We have discussed before the need to clean the unit as well as its part, and we have – for many times – stressed the need for these units to be maintained. Therefore, it is even more essential to check up on these units from time to time. Some find this process to be quite a hassle would just settle for letting the machine by day by day until one day it just breaks down. For those who can just replace it easily, this is pretty convenient, however, replacing the unit just as easy for many is another question.
