Your CPAP unit is a like an organic body comprised of many different parts that need to act together as one. Each part has its corresponding duty that needs to be accomplished so that the rest of the unit could function just as well and as properly. We have discussed before the need to clean the unit as well as its part, and we have – for many times – stressed the need for these units to be maintained. Therefore, it is even more essential to check up on these units from time to time. Some find this process to be quite a hassle would just settle for letting the machine by day by day until one day it just breaks down. For those who can just replace it easily, this is pretty convenient, however, replacing the unit just as easy for many is another question.
The CPAP unit you have right now will stay with you for many years if you know how to maintain it properly. While some might find it tedious, it is actually a pretty easy task to check your machine. Here are some easy steps to help you out:
(1) Checking the Hose
While the hoses are built to be very flexible and durable, you really can’t tell if it has met quite a rough encounter through the days of its use. If the hose has acquired a hole, or even just a crack, it will be unable to do its job properly. It is very easy to check if something is amiss on your hose. Even if it’s white or transparent, there is a way. You can do this quite conveniently while you are cleaning your hose. The first step is to sponge the whole length of the hose. At this point, the bubbles would have covered the whole thing. The next thing to do is to blow air unto the hose and if any more bubbles form, then you would know that there is a hole in that area. Replace the hose immediately.
(2) Checking the Filters
The filters maintain the purity and cleanliness of the air that you are inhaling as you sleep. It is very important that these filters are in their right shape, size, and of course – condition. Check the filters for holes or if it is still suitable for use. CPAP units always have two filters, one of which is disposable while the other is for long term use. Replace these filters accordingly.
(3) Checking the Humidifiers
Checking the humidifiers not only include checking whether or not the unit itself has cracks, it is also very important to check them for impurities. Collections of dust, water impurities and soap particles that might have been accumulated while cleaning – all of which are very important to be inspected and addressed. This is why it is most advisable to have these humidifiers filled with mineral water in order to avoid these impurities.
It is very important to check your unit regularly. If you feel that something is amiss but you still cannot find it on your own, it would be best to seek professional help.
